WrestleMania Time Machine: WrestleMania 28

In the months leading up to WrestleMania 29 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, we'll be taking a look back at the best and worst of WrestleMania's past.

w/ Alex Archer & Violet Buttle

Date: April 1, 2012

Venue: Sun Life Stadium (Miami Gardens, FL)

Attendance: 78,363

On Commentary: Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and Jim Ross (for Undertaker vs. Triple H)

Main Event:  The Rock vs. John Cena

Alex's Opinion

Best: Rock and Cena drew most of the main stream attention, but the real story of WrestleMania 28 was Triple H vs. The Undertaker with Shawn Michaels as guest referee. Hunter and Taker really pulled out all the stops and put on one of the best matches I've ever seen. While giving those two told an amazing wrestling story, Shawn Michaels should be commended for his efforts as guest referee. The way he reacted to the big moves and the ways he interacted with Hunter and Taker were totally on point. While guest referees usually take away from a big match, Shawn made this one seem even more important.

Worst: Even though the aftermath lead to the current Daniel Bryan character, I have to say that the Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan match was the worst on the card. Obviously it wasn't a wrestling match, as Sheamus kicked Bryan's head off in 18 seconds, but it was still the match that was most disappointing. These guys got their dark-matched at WrestleMania 27, and with the stage set for them to steal the show, WWE went for the fluke win instead. In the end, it worked for both men. At the time, I wanted my money back.

Violet's Opinion

Best: Triple H and the Undertaker did not just have the best match at Wrestlemania 28; they had one of the best matches of 2012. In my opinion, this match was much more entertaining than their slower paced Wrestlemania bout from the year before. I think that Shawn Michaels' presence was part of what made this match as good as it was. He oversold everything he did in the best way possible. However, Michaels wasn't the only one working hard to make this second meeting between Triple H and the Undertaker memorable. All three men told a linear and intriguing story throughout the match. This is an example of WWE wrestling at its best.

Worst: Sheamus and Daniel Bryans' Wrestlemania 27 bout was advertised as part of the PPV but was turned into a dark a match, which was then turned into a battle royal. Therefore, I was thrilled to learn that at Wrestlemania 28 we'd finally get to see the match we were cheated out of the year before. However, that wasn't the case. Sheamus won with a Brogue Kick in 18 seconds and ended Bryan's all too short title reign. What a waste of talent and a heavily anticipated match.

WWE Survivor Series Results & Afterthoughts

w/ Alex Archer & Violet Buttle

CM Punk defeated John Cena and Ryback to retain the WWE Championship

Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns
Alex: The match itself was much more entertaining than I expected it to be. The spot where Cena and Punk worked together to put Ryback through the announce table was very well done. I expected Punk to get some sort of flukey win, but I don't think anyone expected the internet-swoon-inducing combination of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and (to a lesser extent) Roman Reigns to debut and destroy Ryback. It'll certainly be interesting to see how these three tie into the Punk/Heyman/Cena/Ryback story going forward.

Violet: I knew that Punk would retain, but I had no idea that he’d have the help of Ambrose, Reigns, and Rollins. Tonight, I can’t wait for Punk to celebrate a full calendar year as champion, and I can’t wait for these three guys to explain their actions.

Sheamus defeated Big Show via Disqualification

Chair match incoming
Alex: Sheamus and Big Show weren't able to recreate the feel of their Hell in a Cell match, but it was still mildly entertaining. It looks like we'll get Big Show/ Sheamus in a chairs match next month at TLC, so any hope of this feud ending last night are shot.

Violet: This was a strong effort, but I still can’t get into either of these guys. I was hoping that this would be the end of their feud, but judging from Sheamus’s post-match rampage, I’m guessing that we’ll see these two in a chairs match at TLC.

Team Ziggler defeated Team Foley in a traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match

Alex: I predicted Ziggler and Sandow surviving... Ziggler was the sole survivor and Sandow was eliminated first. I guess I broke even. This was a good match, but I think the opening elimination match was more fun to watch. I like that Ziggler got a clean pin on Orton, and I like even more that it came off a superkick and not a normal finisher. Things like that make the WWE seem more unpredictable, which is something they desperately need to try and boost ratings and buy rates back up. The Miz remaining babyface and working the crowd the way he did was the most surprising part of the match. There's just some guys that seem weird playing a babyface, and Miz is one of them.
Team Foley vs. Team Ziggler
Violet: A lot of things happened in this match that surprised me.  Miz pinned Barrett, and he did not turn on his team. Sandow was the first heel pinned, not Otunga. And Ziggler was the sole survivor!  Being that this is practically the first time he has won a match since Money in the Bank, I guess he can only get the job done when the stakes are high.

Antonio Cesaro defeated R-Truth to retain the US Championship

...and STILL United States Champion
Alex: There was never a doubt in my mind that Cesaro was retaining. I have nothing against Truth, but his Little Jimmy act has got to go. It seemed to be over early on, but that gimmick is on life support. Cesaro looked great, and I hope to see him move onto a more serious feud.

Violet: Cesaro has had a fairly unremarkable title reign, but I don’t think it’s his fault. I blame Santino, Justin Gabriel, and R-Truth. If the man was given a believable opponent or a legitimate feud, I think there’d be much more substance to what he’s doing.

Eve defeated Kaitlyn to retain the Diva's Championship

Alex: Another convincing win from Eve. Given time, there are a few divas on the roster than actually perform and string together a good match. Eve is definitely one of them, and Kaitlyn wasn't bad herself. I enjoy the story they've been telling with Eve, and I hope it continues to shine a light on the diva's division.

"The move that no one could name"
Violet: This was one of those rare Divas matches where the participants actually had the chance to tell a story in the ring. Both girls did a good job of playing their parts, but Eve was the star here. When given the time, she can be quite impressive in the ring.

Rey Mysterio, Sin Cara, Tyson Kidd, & Justin Gabriel survived in a traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match (Mysterio, Sin Cara, Kidd, Gabriel, & Brodus Clay vs. Primo & Epico, The Prime Time Players, & Tensai)

Alex: I think the opening elimination match was actually better than the one that followed later in the night. I liked that they took out the big men first and really focused on the tag teams that were involved in the match. It was a good way to kick off the pay-per-view.
Four out of five aint bad
Violet: This match was nothing special, but it was fun and it gave some guys who typically don’t get PPV time a chance to show off what they can do.  Except for Brodus Clay. What is the WWE planning to do with him?

WWE Survivor Series Predictions

w/ Alex Archer & Violet Buttle

CM Punk (c) vs. John Cena vs. Ryback for the WWE Championship

Alex: I think CM Punk retains tonight.  I also think he'll retain at TLC to set up Punk / Rock at the Royal Rumble.  I can't see them putting Ryback against Rock, and Cena / Rock 2 just wouldn't have the juice it needs to be a big deal again.  It doesn't make any sense to end his year long title reign just to put the belt back on him at TLC to set up his match with Rock.  I think Brad Maddox interferes in some way and helps Punk retain.

Violet: Because I think Punk will be the guy Rock goes up against at the Royal Rumble, I predict that he retains tonight. It will, however, be interesting to see how he retains against two guys who rarely (if ever) lose.

Big Show (c) vs. Sheamus for the World Heavyweight Championship

Alex: Big Show has actually been pretty entertaining since capturing the World Heavyweight Championship.  I don't feel like Sheamus needs the title to stay on top of the Smackdown roster, so I think Big Show goes over tonight.  I just hope they don't try to recreate Hell in a Cell and get finisher happy.

Violet: I'm still uninterested in both of these guys. I predict that Big Show wins. A Big Show title reign has slightly more potential than another Sheamus reign would.

Team Foley vs. Team Ziggler in a Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match

Alex: There's a lot going on within this match.  Team Hell No and Rhodes Scholars, Miz and Ziggler, and Orton and Barrett/Del Rio.  It kind of leaves Kofi out there without a feud.  I thought that Miz was going to turn on Team Foley, but with Miz and Ziggler facing off on Main Event on Wednesday, I don't see that happening.  Hard to make a solid prediction here, but I think Ziggler and Sandow survive for a victorious Team Ziggler.

Violet:This has the potential to be the most exciting match of PPV, because there are so many different things that could happen. Not only do all of the entrants have feuds going on with members of the opposing teams, but there is also a fair amount of friction amongst the team members. With everything that could happen, it's hard to make a prediction here. I'm not sure who will survive let alone which team will be victorious.

Antonio Cesaro (c) vs. R-Truth for the United States Championship

Alex: I just don't see Truth going over Cesaro at this point, or ever.  Cesaro retains.

Violet: Cesaro has to retain here, right? The crowds seem to be over Truth's antics, and so am I.

Eve (c) vs. Kaitlyn for the Diva's Championship

Alex: Kaitlyn has looked pretty good the last few weeks, but I still think Eve retains.  I don't know when the "who attacked Kaitlyn" story will come to an end, but when it does, I expect Eve to still be the Diva's Champion.

Violet: Eve is the best thing about the Divas division, so hopefully she retains. I wouldn't be surprised to see it go in Kaitlyn's favor, though. It's a chance for her to get even with Eve for allegedly attacking her before a title match months ago.

3MB vs. Justin Gabriel & Tyson Kidd

Alex: I think it's strange that after going a few pay-per-views without a pre-show match, they decide to use this one for Survivor Series, but at least these guys get to do something.  I'll put my money on 3MB coming out on top.  It just seems like WWE is going to put more behind them than they are Kidd and Gabriel.

Violet: I think 3MB wins. For whatever reason, the WWE has been pushing this group and doing nothing with Kidd and Gabriel.

Survivor Series Elimination Matches Through the Years

w/ Alex Archer

Andre the Giant's 1987 Team
With Survivor Series just around the corner, I decided to analyze the elimination matches from years past. From the first Survivor Series in 1987 that saw Team Andre defeat Team Hogan, all the way up to last year's event that saw Team Barrett come out on top of Team Orton, you can find all the winners right here (female wrestlers and midgets not included... sorry Sleazy, Cheesy, and Queasy).

When you look at the Survivor Series elimination matches from a Face vs. Heel perspective, Face teams have produced 77 survivors, where the Heel teams have only produced 36 survivors.

Randy Orton: Top Survivor
While the heel teams seem to be at a distinct disadvantage if you look at those numbers, it's interesting to note that Randy Orton has had the most success in elimination matches, surviving 4 times (03, 04, 05, 08) as a heel. When he entered the match as a face in 2011, he was unable to find the same success, being eliminated by Wade Barrett.

Randy Orton is also tied with Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage for the longest Survivor Series elimination match winning streak with wins in three consecutive years. Randy was victorious in 03, 04, and 05. Warrior and Hogan were both victorious in 88, 89, and 90. Randy Savage survived as a face in 87 and 88, and then again in 89, as his "Macho King" heel persona.

The King's Court - 1989
Joining Randy Savage on the list of wrestlers who have survived as both a heel and a face are 1-2-3 Kid (face: 93, heel: 95), Paul Roma (face: 87, heel: 90), British Bulldog (face: 95, heel: 97), Billy Gunn (face: 97, heel: 96), The Nasty Boys (face: 92, heel: 91), Ric Flair (face: 06, heel: 91), and The Warlord (face: 88, heel: 90).

Ric Flair holds the record for longest span between Survivor Series wins at 15 years. He was the sole survivor in 91 when Team Flair took on Team Piper, and was again the sole survivor in 06 as Team WWE Legends defeated Team Spirit Squad.

Below is a list of all the survivors dating back to the first ever Survivor Series elimination match, including some pictures of some of the more unlikely survivors.

Wrestling You Should See: Volume 3

w/ Alex Archer

Ring of Honor - Showdown in the Sun 2012, Night 2

Davey Richards (c) vs. Michael Elgin for the ROH World Championship

This was really a breakout performance for Michael Elgin. Keeping up with Davey Richards is no easy task, but Elgin did a great job of matching Davey's pace and didn't look out of place doing it. This was an early candidate for Match of the Year, and in my opinion, it's certainly still in the running. You can see the match HERE and if you enjoy it, go pick up the dvd HERE

TNA Turning Point Results & Afterthoughts

w/ Alex Archer & Violet Buttle
Jeff Hardy defeated Austin Aries to retain the World Heavyweight Championship in a Ladder Match

Alex: Something seemed a little off during this match.  It seemed like a lot of standing/laying/stumbling around without knowing what was coming next.  I'm not sure if there was miscommunication during the match, someone forgot some spots, or if things just didn't turn out great, but this match wasn't what I was hoping for.  This sets up Storm/Hardy, which I can't say I'm very excited for, but we'll see what they can do with it.  Not sure where Aries goes now, but hopefully he continues to float around with main event caliber guys and doesn’t disappear back to the midcard or the X-Division.

Violet: Due to Hardy's history with ladder matches, he was a shoe-in for this victory. The match had plenty of cool spots and lots of good work from both of the participants. But, now I'm left excited for what's next. Where does Aries go from here? How will the Hardy/Storm match play out?

James Storm defeated AJ Styles & Bobby Roode in a #1 Contender's Match

Alex: This match played out exactly as I predicted it would.  All three guys worked really hard at making this a memorable match.  Coming out of this match, I'm most interested in what happens with AJ Styles.  Perhaps we'll get heel AJ?

Violet: This match ended in a way that made a lot of sense. Since he was not involved with the pin, Roode loses nothing here. Storm has been trying to get a title shot for ages, so his win will provide him with the vindication that's been searching for. And it makes the most sense for AJ Styles to be the guy to take the big loss here. It's been awhile since he's been anywhere near the title scene, and he's been involved in some awful story lines. Hopefully Styles finds a purpose and some direction in this loss. Otherwise, waiting a year for a title shot would have been a more compelling storyline for either of the two luckier men involved.

Chavo Guerrero & Hernandez defeated Christopher Danies & Kazarian to retain the TNA Tag Team Championship

Alex: Much like after Bound for Glory, I'm left shaking my head and wondering what TNA officials see in Guerrero and Hernandez.  There has to be something I'm missing, because all I see is two mediocre guys with stereotypical gimmicks, and TNA sees tag team champions.

Violet: Daniels and Kazarian are easily the more interesting team and entertaining team. I don't understand why TNA would want to keep the titles on Guerrero and Hernandez.

Samoa Joe defeated Magnus to retain the TNA Television Championship in a No Disqualification Match

Alex: Where the hell does this leave Magnus?  Joe kicks out of his finisher TWICE and then chokes him out, AGAIN.  Magnus hasn't looked this weak in a long time, and it's a shame because he has the look, the in-ring ability, and the skills on the mic to be a major player.  At the same time, this victory didn’t do much for Joe, as he's beaten Magnus every chance he's got without any real competition.

Violet: Of course Joe won. After the match, Taz commented that Magnus should not be ashamed of this loss. I disagree. He's been unable to beat Joe in singles' match, and, last night, Joe kicked out of his finisher twice. After this match, Magnus looks weaker than he needs to.

Kurt Angle defeated Devon

Alex: Why did Aces & Eights wait until Devon tapped to get in the ring?  Things like that are what are making Aces & Eights (and this angle as a whole) seem weak and stupid.  Pointless match with a pointless finish.

Violet: I'm not sure why creative would make Devon look weak by having him tap out when they could have just had Aces & Eights follow their standard procedure of interfering before one of their members loses. I mean, they were ringside anyway. This is not to say, however, that Aces & Eights constant interference is fun to watch. It isn't. It just would have made more sense than the outcome we were given.

RVD defeated Joey Ryan to retain the X Division Championship

Alex: And RVD beats another young guy that would do the X-Division a ton of good as champion.  Great.  What a waste of the X-Division.  So much potential, and we get RVD instead.

Violet: Ryan looked good here, and he certainly comes across as more of an X-Division type wrestler than RVD does. Take the title off of him already!

Doc defeated Joseph Park

Alex: I'm growing incredibly bored with the Joseph Park act.  Park gets beat up, Park bleeds, Park goes Abyss, Park snaps out of it, Park gets pinned.  Rinse and repeat for his next match?  Dumb.

Violet: Doc beats Sting with a hammer and the first guy to get his hands on him is Joseph Park? Okay... Poor opponent choice aside, this match went the same way that all of Park's matches do. He dodges moves, he gets some accidental offense in, he gets some intentional offense in, and he eventually loses. Boring. Are we ever going to get a Park/Abyss payoff?

ODB & Eric Young defeated Tara & Jesse

Alex: After ODB was able to dispose of Tara and Jesse on her own, it wouldn't have made any sense to have them get the better of ODB and EY together.  As usual with TNA, I'm a little confused at where this leads for EY and Jesse, but I would assume that ODB will be challenging for the Knockouts Title in the near future.

Violet: It was nice to EY back and surprising to see him win. With all of the rumors circulating about his departure from TNA, his win is a little puzzling. Hopefully, it's a sign that he's staying.

TNA Turning Point Predictions

w/ Alex Archer & Violet Buttle
Jeff Hardy (c) vs. Austin Aries for the World Heavyweight Championship in a Ladder Match

Alex: I don't see them taking the title off of Hardy this soon, so I think he'll get the win. I think that he'll win clean, but I don't know where that leaves Austin Aries. Either way, it should be an exciting ladder match.

Violet: I doubt that Hardy will lose the title only a few weeks after he won it, especially in a ladder match.

Bobby Roode vs. James Storm vs. AJ Styles in a #1 Contender's Match

Alex: The stipulations surrounding this match should make it pretty interesting. I'd love to see Bobby Roode somehow come away with the win and get it by pinning James Storm. I know, I might be crazy, but I think the Roode/Storm feud is something they could keep alive for as long as these guys are both wrestling. In reality, I think Storm pins AJ.

Violet: With the stipulations attached to this match their are a lot of potential outcomes. I can be sure, however, that AJ Styles will not be the man to win this match and receive an instant title shot. In the end, I think winning this match would be too easy for James Storm. He seems to work best when he's facing adversity, so I predict that Roode wins and carries out this feud for a little bit longer.

Chavo Guerrero & Hernandez vs. Christopher Danies & Kazarian for the TNA Tag Team Championship

Alex: Hopefully TNA realizes the mistake they made and put the titles back on Kazarian and Daniels. Chavo and Hernandez are just sogeneric and boring. They bring nothing to the title picture and the belts do them absolutely no good.

Violet: I can only only that TNA rights one of their wrongs from Victory Road and put the tag belts back on the rightful champions.

Samoa Joe (c) vs. Magnus for the TNA Television Championship in a No Disqualification Match

Alex: This match has the potential to steal the show. This feud has continued to stay hot even though Joe has been getting most of the wins. I think the no-DQ stipulation is great for this match, and I'm hoping that Magnus wins so that this isn't a blowoff match.

Violet: If I didn't already know that Joe would win this match from the moment it was announced, I was made sure of it when Magnus pinned the TV champion on Thursday's edition of Impact. Even though the ending feels inevitable, I am certain that Magnus and Joe will put on an entertaining match anyway.

Devon vs. Kurt Angle

Alex: I usually look forward to Kurt Angle matches, but I just couldn't care less about this one. I have no interest in Devon at all. It wouldn't make sense for Devon to take a loss here, so I guess Devon somehow wins, probably when 6 or 7 other Aces & Eights members hit the ring.

Violet: This is easily the least interesting match on the card. Aren't a dozen members on Aces & Eights going to run out and save Devon at the end? Why bother with this match? Hopefully I'm wrong about this match, and it is saved with some interference from Bully Ray on behalf of his brother.

RVD (c) vs. Joey Ryan for the X Division Championship

Alex: I'm glad to see Joey Ryan jumping right into a title picture, but I wish it wasn't against RVD for the X Division Championship. I think he would've made much more sense for him to go after the Television Championship, seeing as he was fighting to be on television for so long, but what do I know. I hope he wins, but I think they're going to keep the belt on RVD, unfortunately. Somehow the belt needs to find its way back to Zema Ion before Jessie Sorenson returns, so that's even more of a reason I think RVD retains.

Violet: Are we still not addressing the fact that the X Division has a weight restriction? I certainly hope that Ryan walks away champion, and we can all forget about RVD's brief reign.

Doc vs. Joseph Park

Alex: Although I'm not all that excited about this match, I think it has the potential to be a fun match. Joseph Park will get all worked up and act ridiculous, so that'll be funny for a minute or two. I think Doc gets the victory. Aces & Eights still needs to look strong through this pay-per-view, or, really, what's the point?

Violet: I can't believe that Joseph Park is still around. And I can't believe that Hogan gave him a match. Much like my predication for the Kurt Angle vs. Devon match, I have no reason to believe that Doc won't be saved from a raging Park by a dozen of his team members.

Tara & Jesse vs. ODB & Eric Young

Alex: With the rumors of EY leaving TNA, could this be his last appearance? He and ODB are still the Knockouts Tag Champs, so they'll have to figure that into the story somewhere. I think Tara and Jesse win by utilizing some kind of heel tactics.

Violet: Due to the fact that many believe that EY is on is way out, I think that Jesse and Tara will win. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if EY isn't even at the PPV. Either way, I'll be pretty sad if this really is the end for EY and ODB.

Sloppy Setup for Survivor Series

by Alex Archer
Team Foley vs. Team Punk made sense.  They had great chemistry during their verbal interactions and had done a nice job setting up both teams with guys that were currently feuding.  You had Ryback and Punk, Team Hell No and Team Rhodes Scholars, Miz and Kofi, and Orton and Del Rio.  All the pieces fit, and it even kept Cena free to move along with the Cena/AJ/Ziggler/Vicki storyline that could have led to a match on the pay-per-view.

Then Miz quits Team Punk, Ryback and Punk are pulled from the contest and placed into a three way for the WWE Championship, Ziggler is named captain of the team (now known as Team Ziggler), Wade Barrett joins Team Ziggler, and Cena is back in the title picture.

So for our traditional Survivor Series elimination match, we're left with Team Foley, consisting of Team Hell No, Orton, Kofi, and a mystery man vs. Team Ziggler, consisting of Ziggler, Team Rhodes Scholars, Del Rio, and Wade Barrett.  The use of Foley when Punk was in the mix made perfect sense, but now, he's just kind of going to be there for no reason.  He has no gripe with any of the members of the opposing team.

Rise Above Ryback?
The triple threat for the WWE Championship, on the other hand, makes perfect sense, and the way they handled the tag team main event on Raw was perfect.  Ryback left Punk laying, and Cena was left with a bit of doubt on his face.  Punk has been playing the cowardly heel, Ryback has been playing the monster, and Cena can now step into the role of concerned good guy trying to overcome the crafty heel and the monster force.

I think the WWE made the right decision to go to the triple threat main event, but I think they may have lost some buys by setting up this pay-per-view, specifically the elimination match, in such a sloppy way.
