WWE Meets the Indies

by Alex Archer

Since Raw has gone to three hours, it's been glaringly obvious that WWE has been having a tough time keeping the show from dragging. Some new talent could be just what WWE needs. Here are some fantasy feuds from an armchair booker:

The Young Bucks vs. Team Hell No

The brash and arrogant team of Nick and Matt Jackson, together known as the Young Bucks, would instantly draw the ire of the WWE Universe with their heel tactics and their over the top showboating.  A nice two or three month build where the Bucks mock, cheap shot, and constantly get the better of Kane and Bryan would have the fans in a frenzy to see the cocky bastards finally get what was coming to them.  I can almost hear Matt and Nick mocking Bryan for being a vegan dork, and Kane for being a big red nerd.

Kevin Steen vs. John Cena

Kevin Steen is basically the polar opposite of John Cena, even more so than CM Punk is being made to look like.  Steen is constantly kissing, licking, taunting, or straight up fighting fans (yes, I know it was a work), whereas Cena is curing cancer and making wishes come true.  This hero and anti-hero battle could be a new age Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin.

KENTA vs. CM Punk

The Battle of the GTS Finisher.  KENTA was the originator of the Go to Sleep, but Punk brought it to America and has popularized the move during his time with WWE.  A great feud could be built around KENTA coming over from Japan to take Punk down for “stealing” his finisher.  Honestly, the storyline wouldn’t even matter because these two would tear the house down every single night.

Davey Richards vs. Tensai

Richards has proven over and over again that he can work with anyone, especially bigger  guys like Willie Mack, Michael Elgin, and Kevin Steen.  Both Richards and Tensai have a ton of experience in brutal, stiff matches, and a feud between these two would result in some intense, violent matches.

El Generico vs. Dolph Ziggler

Generico is incredible at getting crowd sympathy while taking a beating.  Ziggler’s cocky offense would play perfectly into a passionate, crowd response fueled comeback from Generico.  We all know that Ziggler can sell a wet willy like he’s been shot in the head;  now imagine him selling a Yakuza Kick, a Brainbuster, and the rest of Generico’s fast paced offense.

Eddie Edwards vs. Wade Barrett

Barrett and Edwards have the size, the look, and the ability to pull of a great David vs. Goliath style feud.  Both guys work a physical style and Barrett has the ability on the mic to get a ton of heat by tearing down Edwards for being too small and too weak to compete with him.  This could be a great midcard feud, and I could see the WWE Universe rallying behind Edwards.

An Evaluation of WWE's Tag Team Division

by Violet Buttle

After a long period of a stagnant Tag Team Division, it appears as if the WWE is taking the time to build the once neglected division. With the increase of TV time and the development of new teams, it seems as if the company is taking positive steps toward an interesting tag division. Below, I’ll break down the teams that WWE currently has on the scene to see what they’ll provide to the division and to the WWE as a whole.

Team Hell No (Daniel Bryan and Kane)

Positives: Not only has Bryan shown considerable improvement in his mic skills and his charisma, but his command of his character is impeccable. The evolution that the Daniel Bryan character has undergone since Wrestlemania is truly impressive. But, Bryan isn’t the only good thing about this team. For the first time since I’ve been watching WWE, I am actually interested in Kane. While I was bored by his “Devil’s Favorite Demon” persona, I’m enthralled by the caricature of Kane’s former self that I am now treated to every Monday and Friday night. These two have fantastic chemistry out of the ring, and the dynamics of their matches are fun to watch.

Negatives: Ugh, this name. After the WWE Universe chose to name Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne’s team “Air Boom”, you’d think that creative would do their job and name the teams themselves. Just awful.

Team Rhodes Scholars (Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes)

Positives: Rhodes and Sandow both have well constructed characters with closely aligned gimmicks. Their teaming together makes sense.

Negatives: Before teaming with Rhodes, it seemed as if Sandow was on the verge of a becoming a main event guy. As much as I like this pairing, I really would prefer to see both men receive a push as singles wrestlers. However, this is a very young team, and their work together could very well end up being the catalyst for bigger and better things for both men.

Kofi Kingston and R-Truth

Positives: Kofi Kingston

Negatives: R-Truth

The Prime Time Players (Darren Young and Titus O’Neil)

Positives: Young and O’Neil play off of each other well and both play cocky heels with ease. While some are bothered by their antics (which is the point), I find them to be quite entertaining.

Negatives: O’Neil needs to improve his in-ring work. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve watched him struggle to pin a man.  Seriously.

The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso)

Positives: While most of the current WWE tag teams consist of paired off singles wrestlers, the Usos are a true tag team. Plus, they have one of the most unique ring entrances in all of the WWE.

Negatives: They will likely not get a push with much bigger names now flooding the division. I sense that this is because of their lack of charisma and their physical appearances. WWE likes their guys to look like they hit the gym 24/7 or they want them to look like monsters.
Sometimes both. Either way, the Usos don’t really fit the mold.

Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd

Positives: Both men are dynamic and talented wrestlers.

Negatives: I highly doubt they will ever get the attention they deserve as a team or as singles wrestlers.

WWE Night of Champions Results and Afterthoughts

w/ Alex Archer & Violet Buttle

CM Punk and John Cena wrestled to a draw.  CM Punk retains WWE Championship

Alex: Punk and Cena wrestled a really great match. The near falls, especially after their respective finshers, weren't as believable as they probably wanted them to be, but they did a lot to show both guys toughness. The back and forth was excellent, and the finish was perfect. The only thing I'm weary about is having them overdo it with the Cena/Punk matches. These guys work great together. This could be a money feud that WWE could keep coming back to if they don't blow it all now.

Violet: Punk and Cena had a very good outing. Even though Punk's retention is presented as a fluke, he still comes away from this title match looking strong and deserving of his belt. Also, after watching this match I've realized that Punk really brings out the best in Cena.

Sheamus defeated Alberto Del Rio to reatin the World Heavyweight Championship

Alex: Another good match from Sheamus and Del Rio, and another win for Sheamus. I didn't expect Sheamus to tap out to the arm bar, but they almost had me second guessing myself when Del Rio had it locked in in the middle of the ring. I just want this feud to be over with, to be honest. Del Rio is too good to keep losing to Sheamus every single month. It stopped being entertaining months ago.

Violet: If I had any doubts about Sheamus retaining his title, they were erased when Booker T announced that he was allowing the use of the Brogue Kick. Then, I hardly even watched the match. I didn't need to. Sheamus won with the Brogue Kick. Again.

The Miz defeated Cody Rhodes, Rey Mysterio, and Sin Cara to retain the Intercontinental Championship

Alex: They started off a little sloppy, but this turned into a pretty good match. Sin Cara trying to put his mask on Cody, but then getting it on Miz to setup the finish was a little silly, but it was pretty fun and it could lead to some good feuds/angles.

Violet: The end sequence of this match was so much fun that I almost forgot about its sloppy start. I was pleased to see Miz retain, and I was especially pleased to see Miz win clean. His character is much more effective when he's pushed as a legitimate champion. I wasn't crazy to see Sin Cara bringing out spare masks to put on his struggling opponents. It comes off as a heelish move, and, due to Sin Cara's silence, he can't defend his actions and spin them so that we all understand where he was coming from.

Antonio Cesaro defeated Zack Ryder to retain the US Championship

Alex: They wrestled a very solid match, and Aksana's interference should setup some sort of return match. They could grow this into a feud and elevate both Cesaro and the US Title (and probably Ryder, too).

Violet: Cesaro and Ryder had one of my favorite matches of the night. I feel like both men aren't necessarily given the credit they deserve, but they were able to prove just how good they both can be in this match. I hope that this results in a feud between the two, after all, Aksana's interference at the end of match should give Ryder a reason to chase Cesaro and the title.

Daniel Bryan & Kane defeated Kofi Kingston & R Truth for the WWE Tag Team Championship

Alex: The match was great, the comedy stuff went over well, and the right guys came out on top. Team Friendship might be just what the tag division needed to make it relevant again (as long as they keep the titles in focus and they don't just fall by the wayside).

Violet: Much to no one's surprise, Team Friendship won the titles and continued to butt heads. No matter how obvious the outcome was, it was incredibly enjoyable to watch. I really like the dynamic between Kane and Bryan, and I'm excited to see what their win does for their storyline and the tag division as a whole.

Eve defeated Layla for the Divas Championship

Alex: I got a kick out of the Nancy Kerrigan/Tanya Harding angle that went down with Kaitlyn before the match. Eve played her part well and actually made Layla look half decent in the ring (well, almost). I'm interested in seeing this storyline play out. Eve has done a great job at keeping her character relevant in the post-Big Johnny era.

Violet: I'm so glad to see Eve as Divas champion. She's doing a wonderful job with her new character, and her in-ring work is impressive. I hope that WWE spends some time spotlighting Eve and investigating Kaitlyn's injury. Wouldn't it be interesting if Eve was working with someone and had them take Kaitlyn out rather than doing it herself? This has the potential to be a dynamic Diva story, but I don't trust WWE will give Eve and the Divas the TV time they need.

Randy Orton defeated Dolph Ziggler

Alex: Awesome match with a dumb finish. Why does Ziggler continue to lose? I know he's a future champion and I know he's the future of the WWE, but I'm still frustrated with all of the losses he has taken since winning the MITB. Hopefully this feud is over and Orton somehow gets himself suspended again soon.

Violet: I liked every part of this match except for its ending. Orton would have been perfectly fine without a win here, but Ziggler needs to start looking like a guy who can be the World Heavyweight Champion. He loses far too often for any of us to ever believe he can successfully cash in his MITB briefcase on superhuman Sheamus. And, even if he does find Sheamus in an uncharacteristic moment of weakness so that he could cash in, no one would ever believe that he could hold the title for very long.

Zack Ryder wins the Battle Royal to become the #1 Contender for the US Championship

Alex: Once everyone was in the ring, I would've put money on Clay or Ryder (Tensai if the champ was a babyface), and I was happy to see them go with Ryder. I have to admit, I was mostly glad it was Ryder because I assumed Cesaro would go over him, but wasn't so sure about Clay.

Violet: I worried we might see Clay or Tensai win here but was relieved when Ryder pulled out the victory. I was excited to see Ted DiBase back, but I feel like his comeback was wasted here after he was eliminated fairly early in the match. Also, are we seriously supposed to believe that Santino doesn't understand the rules of a battle royal? Santino can be funny, and he certainly has his place in the WWE... but this man was the previous United States champion, and he's trying to pin guys in a battle royal. Ridiculous.

WWE Night of Champions Predictions

w/ Alex Archer & Violet Buttle

CM Punk (c) vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship

Alex: Before Heyman got involved, I thought Cena was going to come away from Night of Champions with the title and then go on to eventually face The Rock at the Royal Rumble. With Heyman now in the mix, I think the more compelling story would be to have Punk win in some sort of Heyman-influenced way, and then have Punk face off against The Rock with Heyman (and whoever else is involved by then) on his side. Even if that isn't the plan, I still think Punk wins tonight now that Heyman is involved.

Violet: I don't see any reason for Punk to drop the title here. I'm not sure how Punk's new relationship with Heyman will play into things, but I really hope that we see something fun and unexpected.

Sheamus (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship

Alex: The ban on the Brogue Kick has to come into play somehow in this match, or else the last 3 weeks have been a waste of time. I don't think Sheamus will use it and be stripped of the title, but I think he may set up to use it, get stopped by the referee, and then take a cheap shot from Del Rio. If I had to pick, I would say Del Rio finally goes over, and Ziggler cashes in, setting up a triple-threat for the next pay-per-view.

Violet: Even with the ban on the Brogue Kick, I still have a hard time believing Del Rio has any chance of winning here.

The Miz (c) vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Sin Cara for the Intercontinental Championship

Alex: This is a tough one, but I'd put my money on The Miz retaining. Mysterio doesn't need it, Sin Cara as IC Champ makes no sense, and Cody doesn't really need the title back. Whatever the outcome, don't expect to see these four go their separate ways after tonight.

Violet: These four mean could have an entertaining feud for the belt, so I think that Miz retains and the feud continues. And really, what else would these four guys be doing anyway? If done correctly, this match can elevate the status of the Intercontinental Title and the man who walks away victorious.

Antonio Cesaro (c) vs. the winner of the preshow battle royal

Alex: This is a tough one to predict since we don't know the battle royal participants, but if Smackdown was any clue, it might be Brodus Clay. I think it would be silly to take the belt of Cesaro already without letting him have a serious feud, but if dropping the belt led to a serious feud where he chased, then it would make sense.

Violet: I'll be very disappointed if Cesaro drops the belt already. But I don't think he will.

Kofi Kingston & R Truth (c) vs. Daniel Bryan & Kane for the WWE Tag Team Championship

Alex: I don't think anyone is giving Kofi and Truth a shot here. The Team Friendship angle so much going for it that a run at the top of the tag division could finally give it the boost it needs to become relevant again. Kane and Bryan have great chemistry in and out of the ring, and adding the title belts to their act could provide for some great tag matches and some great comedy segments. I can't believe I'm interested in Kane. Daniel Byran is a magician.

Violet: I don't think Bryan and Kane would be in this match if they weren't booked to win it. I'm excited by the idea of these two guys as tag champs. They've got surprisingly good chemistry, and the crowds eat their act up. And, besides, it's about time Kingston ditches Truth and returns to singles competition.

Layla (c) vs. Kaitlyn for the Divas Championship

Alex: I'm interested in how Eve will become involved in the match or the aftermath, but that's about it. I guess Layla retains? Who cares?...

Violet: I'm not at all interested in Layla or Kaitlyn. I am interested in just how much this match will resemble a train wreck.

Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler

Alex: I guess my prediction for this match depends on what order the card is in. If they're first, I think Ziggler wins and cashes in. If they're after the title match and he doesn't cash in, I think Orton wins. Either way I hope that this feud ends tonight and Ziggler moves closer to, or into, the title picture.

Violet: After being made to fool like a fool constantly, I think Ziggler really needs to start winning if we're ever supposed to believe (a) he cashes in the MITB briefcase and wins (b) if he ever gets the title, he holds onto it for longer than a week.

Jerry Lawler Has Won Some Titles...

by Alex Archer
A Young King

As we all know (and saw with our own eyes), Jerry "The King" Lawler suffered a near-fatal heart attack during the Monday Night Raw broadcast on September 10th.  During his feud with the WWE Champion and freshly-turned-heel, CM Punk, Lawler's reputation as a Memphis legend has come under fire.  While we know that the insults CM Punk has been hurling at Lawler are kayfabe, I thought it might be fun to take a look at Lawler's accomplishments as a professional wrestler.  I knew that Lawler was a decorated champion, but I was unaware that he had won 168 championships during his celebrated career (surprisingly, none with the WWE).  Below you'll find a list of all the championships Lawler has won, as well as a list of other accomplishments and awards that have been bestowed upon him throughout his wrestling career.

TNA No Surrender Results and Afterthoughts

w/ Alex Archer & Violet Buttle

Austin Aries challenges a member of Aces and Eights

Alex: Not much to say about this one.  After all was said and done, all this brawl accomplished was setting up the Jeff Hardy injury storyline.  I definitely wasn't impressed.  Hogan telling the "Orlando PD" what to do after the brawl was a good laugh.  "Obstruction of Hulkamania" and "keeping 24 inch pythons without a permit" are serious offenses!

Violet: This fight had such a small impact on me that I had to look up what happened. Not a good sign. It seemed as if Aries missed several opportunities to remove the mask of his opponent. I get that TNA is probably aiming toward a big reveal at Bound for Glory, but it kind of just made Aries look silly.

Jeff Hardy defeated Samoa Joe to advance in the BFG Tournament

Alex: I really enjoyed the match these two put on.  I expected Hardy to go over, but I was hoping the loss would send Joe directly onto something else.  I was hoping for maybe a post-match, hard heel turn, or something like that.  Joe is a great talent and can still put on great matches, but his lack of character at this point is frustrating.

Violet: This match for was nothing special, but it was pleasant to watch.

Bully Ray defeated James Storm to advance in the BFG Tournament

Alex: Although I'm not usually very into matches that feature James Storm, I enjoyed this one.  Both guys worked pretty hard and it showed.  I also liked the finish, it was surprising.  You can usually smell TNA cheap finishes a mile away, but this one got me.  I like that it left the BFG Tournament wide open for Bully or Hardy, and I'm more interested in a Roode/Storm feud than I've ever been.  If they decide to have them clash at Bound for Glory, I hope they really make it feel huge for Storm to be getting his hands on Roode.

Violet: I was pleasantly surprised by this match. I kind of hated the idea of Storm returning after his big championship  loss to Roode and ascending to the top with ease. Storm is much more interesting when he's fighting harder. Roode's interference in Storm's match with Bully Ray was well-played and certainly unexpected, especially since I was 100% sure it would be an easy win for Storm.

Jeff Hardy defeated Bully Ray to win the BFG Tournament

Alex:  The injury angle was strange, and it made Hardy look like a trooper for coming out and competing, but I can't help but feel they missed an opportunity to reveal someone on the TNA roster as an Aces and Eights plant and/or leader.  It seemed like they were dangling Bully Ray as a potential leader or member, but he ended up losing.  They could still go that way, but I fell like this was a big opportunity that they missed out on.  I like Hardy winning the whole thing and look forward to his match with Aries at BFG.

Violet: I might be in the minority with my opinion, but I'm glad to see Hardy walk away as the BFG series winner. I know that there was never  much hype surrounding his position in the series (hell, he even lost a  series match to Robbie E), but I like to see an unexpected winner.

Christopher Daniels & Kazarian defeated AJ Styles & Kurt Angle to retain the TNA Tag Team Championship

Alex: Kaz and Daniels are one of the best acts in wrestling right now, and that says something considering they were mixed up with that awful Claire Lynch storyline for what seemed like forever.  This was a good match with another screwy finish, but the screwy finish fit the bill here.  Even if you didn't like the finish, you have to admit that they put on the match of the night.

Violet: I'm glad to see the Kazarian/ Daniels title reign continue. The only good thing to come out of the Claire Lynch storyline is this partnership.

Zema Ion defeated Sonjay Dutt to retain the X Division Championship

Alex:Without having any buildup on TV over the last few weeks, Ion and Dutt were able to go out there and tell a story pretty well.  The clips before the match definitely helped (as they set up the shoulder injury angle), but both guys did a very good job in the ring.  I'm excited that Zema retained, but I'd be lying if I said that I thought this would get him back on TV every week.

Violet: If these two were given some TV time to flesh out their feud, this match would have been more memorable. However, I was glad to see Ion win a match (especially a title match) clean. I certainly hope they keep him as champion until Jesse Sorensen returns. That feud would elevate the status of both men, as well as the belt.

Miss Tessmacher defeated Tara to retain the Knockouts Championship

Alex: Eh, it was an ok match.  Tessmacher still hasn't won me over and I'd much rather see the belt around Tara's waist.  That said, Tessmacher wasn't terrible in this one.  I predicted she would retain, so that was no surprise.

Violet: We all knew that Tessmacher had something to prove after her loss to Tara on the most recent Open Fight Night, so her win felt inevitable. It's a shame though; I'd like to see Tara as champion.

Rob Van Dam vs. Magnus

Alex: Great match from these guys.  Hopefully Magnus proved to someone in TNA booking that he can go in the ring and put on a pretty good singles match.  I was hoping Magnus would win and his heel push would continue, but such is life.  Hopefully they keep pressing on even though he got the loss.  A rematch victory on Impact would do the trick.

Violet: After losing a bunch of matches due to his foolish thumb pointing routine, I thought for sure we'd see RVD lose again in the same fashion. But, for reasons I can't understand, RVD got the pin. Will Magnus ever catch a break? He's a million times more engaging and charismatic on the mic than most of the guys (and girls) on the roster. Use him!

TNA No Surrender Predictions

w/ Alex Archer & Violet Buttle

Austin Aries challenges a member of Aces and Eights

Alex: The TNA website has the match listed as it is written above, but on Impact, the deal was that Aries would get a match with the "arm breaker" guy. I think that whatever happens, it'll end in a brawl with something shocking happening at the end. Possibly an Aces and Eights reveal?

Violet: I don't think we're likely to have a winner here. There are too many people invested in this storyline for Aries and a member of Aces and Eights to have a clean, uninterrupted match.

Bound For Glory Series Tournament

Alex: I think Jeff Hardy defeats Samoa Joe and James Storm defeats Bully Ray to give us a Hardy vs. Storm final. I would love for this to be the big reveal on Aces and Eights, or at least lead to the reveal of one of those two being in charge. A James Storm or Jeff Hardy heel turn to the Aces and Eights would be a lot of fun. If this doesn't have anything to do with Aces and Eights, though, I think Storm beats Hardy.

Violet: Without question, James Storm will defeat Bully Ray. While I think that Hardy will go over Joe, I wouldn't be totally surprised to see it go the other way. Joe is a formidable opponent, so I could see him and Hardy trading losses (after Hardy's win against Joe on Impact). Either way, I expect Storm to walk away tonight as the BFG series winner.

Christopher Daniels & Kazarian (c) vs. AJ Styles & Kurt Angle for the TNA Tag Team Championship

Alex: The chemistry between Kazarian and Daniels was the only positive thing about the Claire Lynch storyline, so it would make more sense to keep the belts on them, as their act is far more entertaining than the pairing of AJ and Kurt. It would make sense to have AJ's team go over to finally put a nail in this feuds coffin, but I'm really hoping that isn't what happens. I think Kaz and Daniels retain.

Violet: I would assume that Daniels and Kazarian keep their titles, and I hope that is the case. I really hate it when title matches appear out of nowhere. I suppose one could argue that lengthy Claire Lynch storyline and Styles's and Angle's former tag partnership justify this match up, but I'd rather see Daniels and Kazarian facing an actual team.

Zema Ion (c) vs. Sonjay Dutt for the X Division Championship

Alex: We haven't seen anything from the X Division in weeks, which doesn't make a lot of sense considering some of the guys in these matches were getting huge crowd reactions when they were given the chance. I don't see Zema dropping the title until Sorenson comes back, so I think he'll defeat Sonjay tonight.

Violet: If Ion loses the title in match that has gotten no attention, I'll cry. This is no way to be treating the X Division.

Miss Tessmacher (c) vs. Tara for the Knockouts Championship

Alex: They've actually done a decent job with the buildup for this match, but I still can't get excited about a Tessmacher match. I'm just not interested. While I enjoy the ODB/EY stuff, I'd much rather see a title picture that involved ODB, Tara, Gail, and Rayne. So, basically anyone but Tessmacher... Although, I think she'll retain here.

Violet: Tessmacher has something to prove after her lost to Tara on Open Fight Night, so I would guess she will retain here. However, I'd much rather see Tara with the belt.

Rob Van Dam vs. Magnus

Alex: It seems like Magnus might be getting a nice little heel push, so I think he'll win this one tonight. I think Magnus has the skills on the mic, the look, and he's adequate in the ring. He could be a top player in my opinion.

Violet: Magnus has a lot of potential, and hopefully we see him get some of the attention that he deserves tonight.

Gut Check Reactions: Kris Lewie

Violet: Poor Kris Lewie. His in-ring performance was no worse than Alex Silva's. He is no less charismatic than Sam Shaw or Taeler Hendrix. Yet, he's the first Gut Check contestant to be rejected after only hearing from two out of the three judges. While I'm glad that this segment wasn't as formulaic as most Gut Check result segments are, I can't help but feel that Lewie was judged more harshly than former Gut Check participants. I mean, couldn't Bruce Pritchard have said that TNA wasn't right for Lewie instead of saying that the whole damn wrestling business was wrong from him? Yikes.
Poor Kris Lewie

Alex: Kris Lewie wasn't great, but he wasn't as bad as Pritchard made him out to be. I can understand that TNA may not be right for him, but to abandon his dream and get out of the wrestling industry? Shut your fat, stupid mouth, Bruce. While it was good to see them finally say no to someone other than Joey Ryan (who, coincidentally was the most deserving of the contract and has seen the most TV time since his Gut Check), it seemed way too planned. They knew they had to say no to someone soon, so they picked this poor guy. How was he any worse than Alex Silva, Taeler Hendrix, or Sam Shaw? They all got smoked in under two minutes, and none of them looked all that impressive. Gut Check has very quickly become my least favorite part of Impact (minus Joey Ryan showing up every few weeks).
