As soon as Cena entered onto the stage of WrestleMania 28 in new gear, I knew that WWE made a mistake. Sure, they're probably making money in merchandise sales; but, in terms of storytelling and character development, Cena’s lively, green new look is a step backward.
When I saw pictures of the gear online prior to WrestleMania, I knew for sure that I could rule out the possibility of Cena turning heel anytime soon. Would a man wearing a t-shirt covered in phrases like “rise above hate” and “never give up” be a villain? Probably not. To top it all off, this new design features an image of Cena standing against the backdrop of a globe and saluting. Clearly, Cena is going to remain the military-loving, hustle-loyalty-respect touting guy that a substantial part of the WWE Universe is tired of.
However, this is not what bothers me most about Cena’s new look. While I think a heel turn would be a refreshing change for the character, I would accept any kind of evolution. Unfortunately, Cena is back to wearing jorts and the bright colors that inspire the corny “Fruity Pebbles” chants. The return to this dated and frequently mocked get-up is sign that the highly publicized feud with The Rock has done nothing to push Cena’s character forward, which is surely going to leave a lot of people disappointed.
